Laser Therapy (LLLT)

Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) is the application of light over injuries or lesions to improve wounds and soft tissue repair, reduce inflammation and give relief for both acute and chronic pain. It is popularly used for soft tissue injuries, post operative pain, joint conditions and non healing leg and pressure ulcers.

HOW IT WORKS

LLLT is not a heat therapy, it is more like photosynthesis in plants. Light causes intracellular photochemical changes that lead to a cascade of downstream intracellular, extra cellular and physiological changes.

When cells are stressed, Nitric Oxide inhibits oxygen consumption by mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase. This reduces production of ATP and causes oxidative stress leading to increased inflammation and reduced production of ATP. Low Level Laser Therapy displaces Nitric Oxide from cytochrome c oxidase thereby reducing inflammation and restoring ATP production, helping tissues heal more quickly.

TREATMENT

Laser therapy is applied over a course of 6 sessions, two or more times a week. For some conditions further courses of treatment may be needed.
