Shiatsu
is a gentle natural healing discipline springing from the same Oriental
principles as Acupuncture. "Shiatsu" means "finger
pressure" in Japanese, and like Acupuncture, works by stimulating
the body's vital energy flow (known as Ki in Japanese). Instead
of using needles, a Shiatsu practitioner uses thumbs, fingers, elbows
and sometimes knees and feet to apply pressure and stretching to
the body's energy lines, known as meridians.
How
Shiatsu works
My belief is that all healing is self healing and that in giving
Shiatsu I act as a catalyst to help the receiver get in touch with
their own innate self-healing abilities. On a physical level Shiatsu
stimulates the circulation and helps to release deep-seated tension
from the muscles. In a more subtle way, Shiatsu can help a receiver
to get in touch with other levels of being.
Benefits
of Shiatsu
Shiatsu can be used as a remedial therapy for both acute and chronic
conditions such as stress, anxiety, tension, migraine, menstrual
problems, back pain etc. By having a regular Shiatsu session it
can be used alongside orthodox and other therapies.
What
to expect from a Shiatsu session
Shiatsu takes place fully-clothed usually on a padded surface. A
session lasts approximately 40 minutes - 1 hour. Shiatsu usually
leaves a feeling of being invigorated yet relaxed.
Number
of sessions needed
Each Shiatsu session is attuned to an individual's personal health
and character so the duration and frequency of treatments will vary
from person to person.
Before
a Shiatsu session
To
gain the most benefit from a Shiatsu session it is best:
-
not
to drink alcohol or have a heavy meal at least 2 hours beforehand
-
to
wear loose, preferably cotton clothing such as track/jogging suit
- to
bring details of any current medical diagnosis or medication you
may be taking.
