Pre Menstrual Syndrome

Pre Menstrual Syndrome (PMS) has become an increasingly recognised problem. It is characterised by the presence of symptoms occuring anything from a few hours to up to two weeks premenstrually, and resolving with or shortly after the menstrual period. Despite the periodicity consistent hormonal abnormalities have not been described.

Many different treatments have been advocated for Pre Menstrual Syndrome including hormonal, pharmacological and nutritional approaches. In this retrospective analysis of women on a combined dietary and nutritional supplement programme, a high degree of success was reported. Such an approach however is not acceptable to all women. A healthy eating plan together with appropriate nutritional supplements including substantial doses of vitamin and mineral supplements, is an affective way to treat PMS without resorting to hormonal treatments.

Recently similar dietry recommendations have been studied in a controlled setting , in the treatment of benign breast disease, with a favourable outcome to those given this treatment.

Cranial Osteopathy has undergone successful trials in the treatment of Pre Menstrual Syndrome (Cleary & Fox, C Med Research Journal, 9/95, Vol 4.3); and a large 1993 study from the Hospital Boucicant, France, determined the usefulness of botanical compounds, so combining these again can provide help for an otherwise difficult to treat problem.

Pre Menstrual Syndrome treatment by Acupuncture, Herbs & Homeopathy. Acupuncture successfully treats PMS by balancing the women's hormonal system. Similarly homeopathy will balance the hormones with the use of remedies.
