Migraine
and headaches can have a variety of causes that require a variety
of treatment approaches to help stop them recurring.
A
research study in the early 1980's found that the majority of sufferers
of regular headaches and migraines had detectable musculo-skeletal
mechanical joint problems, and these can be treated by Osteopathy
thus preventing the mechanical causes of headaches and migraines.
The additional symptoms of migraines can come from the higher levels
of pain causing 'shock-like' hormonal changes in the body or nerve
interferences, (for example the acidity of the stomach can be affected
from the top of the neck), and these symptoms can be cleared with
Osteopathic treatment.
Most
of the headache symptoms emanate from tightness and alteration in
the bony configuration of the upper back and Osteopaths often find
themselves treating this area because their knowledge shows them
in many cases that this is the source of the problem. Likewise,
however, the head itself can benefit from the very gentle cranial
osteopathic release techniques of tension in itself in headache
and migraine sufferers.
