Joint Pain Care of the Elderly

The elderly tend to have every ache and pain (from minor to serious) put down to 'age/wear and tear' when in fact these can be the same range of treatable musculo-skeletal mechanical injuries that afflict younger ages; and the response rate of more elderly to Osteopathic treatment compares favourably with younger age groups. Wear and tear/arthritis where it is afflicting the elderly can be eased immensely with Osteopathy.

All Osteopaths are trained to adapt and prescribe their techniques to suit each patient and in the case of the elderly this can often mean gentler techniques being required to cope with more frail bones and tissues, British Osteopathy has created and led the development of the 'minimal leverage' system of Osteopathic techniques that achieve the same benefits as the previous 'combined leverage' system but with greatly reduced force and tissue strain to the patient, and this system can be particularly useful in treating the elderly.

Jonathan Cove, principal Osteopath at the Carlton Clinic, has been a senior lecturer in Osteopathic techniques and has toured Japan by invitation lecturing to doctors and Osteopaths there on the minimal leverage system of manipulation, his partner is a specialist in non-joint thrust manipulation treatment. We also have a specialist in the extremely passive Cranial Osteopathy, performing all his treatments in this speciality.
