Diabetes
can reduce the circulation and sensation in your feet. As a result,
foot problems may occur without your being aware of them.
Check
for signs of redness in any part of the foot or leg. Also, if the
foot feels warmer than usual, this might indicate infection or inflammation,
which needs prompt professional attention. Awareness of pain and
injury may be diminished, so inspect the inside of your shoes daily
for objects like nails or torn linings, which might cut the skin.
If
you notice any "abnormal" changes, or any discharges,
throbbing or itching, consult a State Registered Chiropodist as
soon as you can. Remember to tell him or her that you are diabetic.
He
or she is able to treat any corns, callous, ulcers or pressure sores
which may of developed.
Even
if you haven't any problems, see your State Registered Chiropodist
for regular checkups, who will check for any changes, will cut or
file your toenails if you have difficulty doing this your self,
and will give advice on footcare and footwear.
Your
State Registered Chiropodist can make insoles, which will fit easily
into your shoes, to redistribute the weight on your feet and relieve
any pressure; and toe protectors for deformed or painful toes.
